How To Deal With An Uninvited Spirit

New witches and even well seasoned witches worry about encounters with spirits. I’ve seen it so many times, a witch is excited and ready to jump into the craft but their fear of attracting spirits that they don’t know, and how to deal with an unwanted spirit end up getting in the way and often times than not ends up holding them back. Then there are older witches who have had plenty of experiences with the other side, however we may be out of practice so we must brush up on such things. While spirits might seem scary up front, the vast majority of them are nothing to worry about.

Let me try to explain, we are both physical and spiritual beings residing in a physical plane of existence. We can access spiritual planes without much trouble but our natural state of being is here in the physical world. Spirits are purely spiritual beings, they have no physical manifestation so their grounding in this reality is very weak. What this means is that you are almost always going to be stronger than any spirit you encounter here in this plane!

Most spirits know this and the ones that are mischevious will try to convince you otherwise. They’ll resort to scare tactics and fear-mongering to make you feel like you don’t have any power or like they can hurt you. But the only way they actually get any power over you is if you give up your power.. Sadly this works a lot of the time! People get freaked out by a spirit who’s all bark and no bite and they end up in a compromised situation simply because they didn’t know any better.

Whether it’s a confused ghost, a mean-spirited apparition, or a trickster trying to one-up you, here are a few things that I hope will help ease this situation.

Many new witches are especially prone to picking up errant spirits because they have less control over their energy (which can look like a beacon to a wandering spirit) and they have an air of naivety about them. This combination can make some spirits feel very welcomed. Particularly shy spirits can often gravitate to newer witches because the fresh, open energy and lack of preconceived notions can feel less threatening. Unfortunately, this same open and unsullied energy can also look like gullibility to not so friendly spirits.

If you feel comfortable trying to help the well-meaning spirits that find their way to you, that’s great! You can learn a lot from these beings. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea though, don’t sweat it. You do not have to deal with any spirit, friendly or not, who shows up asking you for help. There are tons of other witches out there who are more prepared for this kind of work and these spirits can find those other witches just as easily.  Protecting your boundaries should never make you feel bad. Decide what you are and are not comfortable with and stick to it when those boundaries get challenged.
While many spirits will accept a polite but firm “No, thank you” and be on their way, others will not. In situations where a spirit won’t go away even after you expressed that they are not welcome, it’s time to move on to something more serious.

Cleansing your space and yourself should always be step one. This ensures that you’re not having to deal with errant energies, negative feelings, or magical sludge while trying to get rid of the spirit. it also ensures that you’re not being influenced by the spirit in any way, many spirits can impact how you think and feel and this can have a marked effect on your actions! Cleansing will cut through all of that nonsense and give you a clear space and a clear mind.

Smudging, it's essentially an all-purpose spiritual cleanser that typically involves sage bundled together along with a few other herbs that are then lite on fire and then the smoke is directed into affected areas. If the energy is darker then some turn to Palo Santo which is also refered to as "Holy Wood", this will send a direct message to your spirit, but won't offend it. Make sure to smudge every room of the house, with special attention paid to any outward-facing corners, since it's said that these corners act as boundaries between your home and spirit activity, and always, always remember  to open the windows. You can also try salting your home's entryways and corners. (This is a little more aggressive and will work if your spirit resists the smudging.) Certain Crystal's, religious talismans, and holy water are also useful cleansing tools to have on hand. The presence of these things alone should send a message. I like to follow up with Florida water because the floral and citrus scents act as a purification of the areas as well as a form of protection and balance for the space.

After cleansing you might still have a stubborn supernatural issue.  You might want to try a banishing spell, there are tons of banishing spells out there that incorporate many things like black salt, graveyard dirt to eggshells and hot foot powder. Most importantly you must sprinkle the afflicted area with these ingredients to set up a secure boundary.

If you’re worried about this happening again, then you will need to ward yourself and your house. Thankfully, warding is a pretty easy skill to learn and it tends to be effective on many layers. Not only will it prevent most spirits from being able to get to you but it will also send a very firm message to them that you are not messing around when you say you don’t want spirits in your space. This gives the very clear impression that you are not naive, not messing around, and not likely to be intimidated by any spirits.

Begin by going to the place you wish to ward and close your eyes. Vividly envision the entire area being filled with either burning flames, a blinding light, toxic shadows, etc.  Be absolutely certain that this energy fills the ENTIRE area, do not leave any gaps!!!

With this done, open your eyes and summon up all the power you can muster from within yourself and push it into the surrounding area with the intent for it to harm whoever dares enter.

The next thing would be a candle ritual, all you need is

Black candle

Black salt

Black Pepper or Chili Powder or Hot foot Powder

Any Oils For Banishing

Herbs For Banishing

Begin by slowly sprinkling salt in a counterclockwise circle around you and your work area, visualize the salt creating a barrier, protecting you during your ritual. Call the target of your banishing spell to mind and carve your intention into the candle. Such as "All unwelcome spirits must leave here and not return"

When you’ve finished, anoint your candle with the oil and sprinkle the pepper over it. Set the candle into your candle holder and light it, speaking your intention aloud. Repeating the intention while the candle burns.

Allow the candle to burn itself out, depending on your choice of candle, it may take several hours to burn completely. Do not leave your candle unattended! I perfer smaller ritual candles or black tea light candles.

Now I think its important that we talk about the reason a lot of spirits don't leave when you first tell them to. The short answer is that they don't actually think you are going to do anything about it if they DON'T leave. They can be very stubborn and this is when you need to stand firm in your power and give them no choice. The weaker you present to the spirit world the more you invite aggressive and often times confrontational spirits in. The quicker you are able to take your power back and remain steadfast in giving the spirit no choice but to leave. Truth be told they can choose the easy way or the hard way, you my witch friend need to be prepared for either. Spirits are attracted to light and will find any way to engage, what it truly boils down to is how much you are willing to take and what you feel you are called to do should you find yourself in this situation. Only you know the answer to these questions, however never lose sight of the fact that you dictate the terms and you will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of your home or peace of mind, as this is your sacred space and as such there is no room for any form of supernatural infestation.

Many Blessings Jillian
